Abbey Wood is the MoD Equipment Procurement and Support centre nestled on the outskirts of Bristol. It is home to 15,000 Royal Navy, Army, RAF and Civil Servant personnel who plan and implement the procurement of military equipment and administer through life support. Formed in 2003 the team has become the established Tri Service Field Gun Crew in the Armed Forces.
This year’s crew is a healthy mix of all three services. The team is lead by Lt Cdr Paddy Carbery RN, the Number 1 trainer, who is a veteran of Field Gun and ran in the record breaking (1.18.88) Collingwood crew in 2001. For the last few years Abbey Wood has competed with the highest average age of the competition, this is in large part due to the level of seniority required to hold a post within Defence Equipment and Support. This year has seen an influx of younger, fitter Field Gunners, many of whom have recently returned from Afghanistan, to bring the fight to the parade ground of HMS Collingwood.
The crew has gone from strength to strength in the last four years, culminating in a 3rd place finish in the 2010 final. This recent progress would not have been possible without the dedicated support of the hard-working back room staff and of course the loyalty of our sponsors. Abbey Wood is proud to be associated with Debut Facilities Management and L3 WestCam. Learn more about the crew and view photographs of the day at our website www.gunteam.co.uk
