Policy for Adventurous Training in the Armed Forces:
Adventurous Training (AT) provides the means to develop necessary individual and leadership skills within a controlled risk environment. It is recognised by all three Services that AT enhances operational capability by enhancing the physical and mental robustness of Service personnel. Increasingly it is recognised that AT also contributes to recruiting, operational stress management, personal development and retention, all of which serve to ensure an enduring military covenant throughout the careers of Service personnel.

The Joint Service Adventurous Training Charter (JSAT Charter) was first introduced in 1973 and has evolved over time to become JSP 419 which provides the conceptual framework, guidance and associated risk management mechanisms to deliver Adventurous Training across the Joint Service environment.

Nine adventurous activities are funded by Defence as the foundation of the JSAT programme of formal courses to train individuals to a standard that enables them to lead and instruct others within their respective organisations. Each Service has delegated sponsorship responsibility for the following:

  • Offshore Sailing RN
  • Sub-Aqua Diving RN
  • Canoeing/Kayaking Army
  • Caving Army
  • Mountaineering Army
  • Ski Touring Army
  • Paragliding/Parachuting RAF
  • GlidingRAF
  • Mountain Biking RAF

Organisation for Adventurous Training in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines:
Supporting regulations for Adventurous Training (AT) and Challenging Activities (CA) in the Royal Navy are contained within BR 4024 (Adventurous Training in the Royal Navy).

As the lead single Service sponsor for Offshore Sailing and Sub Aqua Diving DNPD owns and runs two centres; the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) at Gosport and the Joint Services Sub Aqua Diving Centre (JSSADC) at Fort Bovisand, Plymouth.

In order to support 2SL\'s Personnel Functional Standards, that mandates that at least 20% of Naval Service personnel are to be given the opportunity to participate in 5 working days of AT/CA each year, the Navy has established a Naval Outdoor Centre (Germany) (NOCG). NOCG provides the capacity for 2250 Naval Service personnel to achieve 2SL’s PFS.

Proficiency and Instructor courses for all JSAT schemes are delivered at a variety of Type 4 AT Centres in UK and abroad, and further course information and booking details can be found at www.ahrc.co.uk (the Army – but generally accepted as Tri-Service – website for Type 4 course bookings).
