Expeditions

Introduction

Adventurous Sail Training expeditions can range in scope from a weekend sailing in the Solent area, longer channel cruises with calls at UK and foreign ports, or even major worldwide expeditions which include crew changes overseas and ocean passages.

Long distance exercises are undertaken in the Challenge 67 and Nicholson 55 STC, with berths for 14 and 11/12 respectively, which are fully equipped for ocean sailing. The Victoria 34 STC, with berths for up to 7 personnel, are ideal for local expeditions, particularly along the south coast of England and the north coast of France. However, they can be deployed to the Canary Islands, the Med or Northern Europe for particular Unit expeditions.

To enhance flexibility, JSASTC STC can be detached to forward operate for short periods of time under the auspices of Commands or individual Units in UK and abroad, or to fit in with RN Groups or individual ship deployments or refit periods.

Planning an expedition

To plan an expedition contact JSASTC for detailed advice well in advance of the date - 2 years is not too early for a major expedition. Then apply for the allocation of a Sail Training Craft by completing and returning the STC application form available on this website. There is no cost attached to the allocation of a STC although berthing fees etc will need to be considered as an expedition expense. Check that you and your crew(s) have the appropriate qualifications required for your chosen expedition area. Project Officers must send JSASTC a completed copy of a JSATFA for all expeditions.
