RN Judo Association
The Royal Navy Judo Association (RNJA) is the govering body for Judo in the Royal Navy, that also includes the Royal Marines. Within the RNJA, at present there are 2 clubs, one at HMS Sultan in Gosport, Hampshire and one at CTCRM Lympstone in Exmouth, Devon. These are the base clubs for the RN & RM contingents respectively, however, individuals will always strive to train wherever they are in the world and wherever they are based.
Every year in the Autumn, the RNJA holds the RN Championships, which act as a selection tool for the following Inter-Services Championships, hosted in turn by each of the 3 services – RN, ARMY & RAF. Squad training for these, and other events take place every 2 months at one of the British Judo Performance Institutes (BJPI’s) and allow the squad and committee to get together to train as a team.
RN players take part in various levels of competitions throughout the BJA calendar and have some outstanding talent. John Thacker has recently (Jan 2012) taken part in the Commonwealth Judo Championships and has also recently been awarded the grade of 5th Dan, and achievement which has marked and recognised all the hard work he has put in for RN judo over the years. The RNJA also has one of 4 Royal Navy Elite Sportsmen in Chris Sherrington who recently took Silver at the British Closed Championships in the +100Kg category. Chris has been training full time for the past 6 years in one of the BJPI’s in Scotland and has achieved Gold in the Samoa stage of the World Cup in 2011, gaining valuable Olympic points and increasing his chances of representing TeamGB and the RN in the 2012 Olympics.
