Policy for Sport in the Armed Services:

Government policy for sport in Armed Services generally common to RN, Army and RAF and governance is provided by the Combined Service Sports Board.

Organisation for Sport in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines:

Policy, development, organisation and direction for sport in the RN and RM sits within the Directorate of Naval Physical Development (DNPD) based at HMS TEMERAIRE in Portsmouth. Royal Navy Physical Training Instructors (PTI's) together with RN Sports Associations organise events and competitions to encourage and develop teams and individuals from ships, submarines, aircraft squadrons, RM commando units and training establishments from grassroots through to those who represent the Royal Navy.

Sports Facilities:

Excellent sports facilities are provided by the MOD so that all Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel can participate in sport at every opportunity. These include a full range of grass and synthetic playing fields, gymnasia, swimming pools and indoor and outdoor courts for tennis, squash and netball.

Time for Sport:

The vital contribution that sport makes to military capability is recognised by the allocation of time during the working day for personnel to participate in a range of activities supported by a menu of sporting opportunities to cater for sport at all ability level.

RN Sports Lottery and RNRM Charity: Although some funding is provided for sports by the MOD, the majority of funding for day-to-day activity and competition comes from the RN Sports Lottery www.rnsportslottery.co.uk and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity www.rnrmc.org.uk

RN Sports Associations:

39 RN Sports Associations (sports clubs) provide opportunity for RN and RM personnel to participate in a huge range of sport at all ability levels. Each Association is run by a committee of volunteers who allocate money, organise events and training camps. When possible, non-public funding is used to support sports tours to enhance the skills of players by competing against a range of opposition outside the Naval environment.
