RM CONDOR is located 2 miles (3 km) northwest of the centre of Arbroath in E Angus and began life as a Fleet Air Arm facility in 1938, and later became a Royal Naval Air Station, known as HMS CONDOR. The home of 45 Commando Royal Marines since 1971, CONDOR has a complement of almost 900 military and civilian personnel.
45 Commando’s gymnasium opened in April 2008 and contains a standard sports hall, a climbing wall, 3 squash courts, an activity space (primarily used as a DOJO space) with punch bags, cardiovascular and weight training areas, sports and Adventurous Training store and a communal relaxation area. Adjacent to the gym are the No.1 Football and Rugby pitches and an all weather pitch all of which are floodlight capable. Boxing matches take place in Bewley Hall and other facilities include a ski-slope, vertical assault training facility including external climbing wall, fast roping stance and abseil platform. Tennis courts are available and a clay pigeon shooting club has been formed.
Just outside the internal perimeter, is the airfield which is maintained for operational purposes, including use as a drop-zone for parachute training, but is also regularly used by 662 Volunteer Gliding School. It also contains a 9-hole golf course with a driving range and pavilion for general social use as well as two additional football pitches.
Lovat Lodge
Lovat Lodge located in Braemar within Deeside, was purchased by the Royal Marine Corps as a holiday retreat for personnel serving within the RMC but is available to other Service personnel (serving and retired) to enjoy the wonders of "bonnie" Scotland. The cost of renting the Lodge is:
Sunday - Thursday £40 per day
Friday - Saturday £50 per day
Braemar is stooped in heritage, with Balmoral Castle 20min drive away. Braemar village is small but offers a wide variety of activities, the location itself is ideal for outdoor activities like skiing, walking, fishing and canoeing, and major cities are only 1-1.5hr drive away.
